Cousin: Man jumps from car before crashing into mailboxes in Lower Valley

A car crash caused significant damage to mailboxes and jolted residents awake in the Lower Valley early Tuesday morning.

It happened on the 200 block of Maravilla Drive, not far from Loop 375 and Padres Drive.

One person was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, according to the fire department. The cousin of that person tells ABC-7 they were injured from jumping out of the moving car. They are reportedly in the Intensive Care Unit.

Police told ABC-7 the crash was involved in a domestic incident.

“My son’s the one that went running into my room and said ‘Dad we heard a bang,'” Armando Flores, a resident in the area whose family was woken up by the crash, told ABC-7. “We have our neighbors, he has cars outside of his house and we didn’t know if he had hit a car or anything. When we came out, there was a vehicle over there and it was on and it was by itself.”

The car was a silver sedan that lost its front bumper and pieces of its headlights in the crash. Officers told ABC-7 crews they have one person in custody, although it’s unclear how that person is involved.

“There’s a lot of lot of damage,” Flores said. Most of the damage was done to his neighbors’ property. “They’re older neighbors. As I said, we’ve been here for a long time. And they’re really, really good neighbors. They’re pretty upset, pretty upset right now.”

There was a fence seen damaged on the scene, but officers cannot confirm if the car slammed into that or if it was damaged prior to the crash.

The crash was reported just after 2 a.m. Officers have not said what happened leading up to the crash.
