Borderland Immigration Council: Feds releasing immigrants without proper medical care
The Borderland Immigration Council also said federal immigration officials are releasing the migrants without proper medical care. They say some of the migrants are arriving at shelters sick.
In recent weeks, CBP has been releasing migrants seeking asylum to shelters along the border, saying it no longer has room or the manpower to process the migrants, merely given an order to appear in court.
Ruben Garcia said volunteers at the shelters are often being forced to find medical care for some of the migrants. “Two babies that have been admitted to hospitals with Pneumonia and a woman with her blood sugar approaching 600,” said Garcia.
Members of the council also denounced President Trump’s immigration policy and the president’s call for troops along the border.
Earlier this week, the Pentagon announced it was sending 5,200 troops to the US-Mexico border to help Customs and Border Protection with a surge of migrant refugees entering the country to request asylum. The move comes as several caravans of Central American migrants walk towards the US via Mexico.
Thursday, the Borderland Immigration Council also revealed new numbers which show an increase in immigrants seeking asylum in the US.
“We are receiving approximately 350 migrants per day. There are days that are approaching four hundred,” said Garcia, with Annunciation House, a shelter that works with federal immigration authorities to house migrants seeking legal residency or asylum in the US.
The group says Trump’s rhetoric is politically motivated, aimed at striking fear about immigrants coming into the US on the eve of the election.
The Catholic Diocese of El Paso and the Annunciation House are increasing the number of shelters and bed space throughout El Paso and Las Cruces to meet the need. They are also asking for volunteers and supplies to be donated at the Annunciation house.
The Annunciation House told ABC-7 it has plenty of food and clothing for the migrants. It currently needs monetary donations, made out to Annunciation House, and mailed to 815 Myrtle Avenue, El Paso, Texas 79901.
The shelter did ask for donations of medicine:
