Quade Cummins rallies in final round to take Sun Bowl Golf Classic
Quade Cummins shot a 62 in the final round of the Sun Bowl Marathon All-America Golf Classic Tuesday at El Paso Country Club to complete an inspired comeback and claim the tournament title.
Cummins, who plays for Oklahoma, is the second consecutive winner from a Big 12 school after Doug Ghim of Texas won last year’s event.
The Oklahoma star’s 9-under par performance Tuesday had him tied at 13-under with Georgia’s Spencer Ralston after the two had played 18 holes on the day.
But Cummins would go on to birdie the first playoff hole to pull off a remarkable victory that required him to play a near-perfect round. In fact, Cummins did not record a single bogey on the final day.
Bryson Nimmer of Clemson finished 12-under for the tournament to take third place.
Previous winners of this tournament include Davis Love III in 1984 (North Carolina), Tiger Woods in 1995 (Stanford), Matt Kuchar in 1999 (Georgia Tech), and Webb Simpson in 2007 (Wake Forest).
