Friends and family mourn the death of Amanda Ferguson Weyant

Today, friends and family are mourning the loss of Amanda Ferguson Weyant, the 28-year-old school teacher that was hit and killed early Thanksgiving morning.

Amanda’s father spoke at the candlelight vigil that was held for his daughter earlier today saying, “I have no words to express why Mandy has left at such an early age. I was happy to give her a hug the very first day she was born, and the last night before she died I got to hug her and tell her I love her.”

Amanda Ferguson’s best friend Desiree Martinez told ABC 7 that she is in disbelief that her best friend is gone. “Never in a million years, did I ever think I’d wake up on Thanksgiving day to my best friend passing away,” Martinez said, “So many memories that we had, and so many future memories that now we’ll never get to enjoy.”

Martinez said that Ferguson was full of life, and had an intense love for the Green Bay Packers. Martinez told ABC 7 “From head to toe game day, she was a beanie, scarf shirt, leggings, all packers, she was a big fan of Aaron Jones, being that he was from El Paso.”

A makeshift memorial was also set up at the corner of Cincinnati Street and Mesa Street, the exact location where Ferguson was struck and killed.

The intersection is described by people in the area as a very low lit, busy intersection. Esai Ontiveros, a UTEP Student said he believes El Paso Police Officers should be patrolling the intersection on Friday and Saturday nights, to help people cross safely. He said, “At night when people are out it does get a little more clustered, and there is a lot of traffic that comes by, and its harder for the cars to see you because there are not enough lights.”

Many people declined to talk to ABC 7, saying they did not want to talk about what happened, and instead left flowers at the Mesa memorial.

Martinez told ABC 7, “She was the type of person, that would give you the last dollar in her purse, she was full of joy, always brought a smile to everybody. Whenever your feeling down, think of Mandy and mandy will get you through it.”
