How can you prevent a package theft this holiday season?

With this Cyber Monday predicted to be the largest online shopping day in United States history, how can you prevent package theft?

“We want to warn all of our online shoppers to use all the precautions they can,” said Dan Trujillo, a spokesman for the Las Cruces Police Department.

Trujillo had several tips for preventing package theft:

Have the package delivered to work Have a neighbor keep an eye out for a package Have the package delivered for a certain time Install a camera system that is links to a front door

In June, a motion-detecting camera system helped police identify Allise Brittany Garcia in connection with stealing a package from a Las Cruces home. Authorities also arrested her boyfriend, Devon Sellers, who they say was her accomplice.

The owner, who asked to remain anonymous, told ABC-7 he purchased the camera just days before the theft.

“It came in the knick of time,” he said. “We knew it’d be useful, but we didn’t know that it was going to come out this handy for us.”

The camera systems cost anywhere from $100 to $300 on Amazon.

Other Cyber Monday shoppers say they’re prepared for the holiday.

“We can see when our packages come,” said Robyn Kokahle. “I used to get them sent to work, but we’ve never had a problem.”
