EPPD: Man attacks couple ‘randomly and without provocation’

El Paso Police arrested a man accused of attacking a couple “randomly and without provocation.”

The couple, caring for their for their toddler-aged grandchildren at the time, was the victim of a “surprise attack” as they arrived at their home early Saturday morning. The attack happened on the 10800 block of Cardigan, police said.

31-year-old Marco Huerta, of the 10900 block of Sagebush, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, police said. He allegedly attacked the couple in front of their grandchildren.

Police said Huerta stabbed and hit the man as the man was opening the gate to the couple’s home after arriving from a trip.

The man’s wife tried to intervene but, Huerta turned on her, police said, kicking and stomping on her head as she lay on the ground.

Responding officers located Huerta standing in the middle of the 3300 block of Lee Trevino, where they took him into custody.

The husband and wife were transported to an area hospital with serious injuries.

Huerta was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility on a $200,000 bond.

Online jail records show Huerta has an extensive criminal history, including arrests for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, assault causing serious bodily injury, criminal mischief, stalking, interfering with an emergency phone call and family violence.
