Netflix issues warning about the dangers of participating in ‘Bird Box Challenge’

Netflix is warning people not to participate in the “Bird Box Challenge,” a new trend in which blindfolded people attempt to mimic sequences seen in one of the streaming service’s newest hit films.

“Bird Box,” the apocalyptic movie starring Sandra Bullock, was the most-watched movie in Netflix’s history. Last week, the movie streaming service tweeted out that “45,037,125 Netflix accounts have already watched Bird Box — best first 7 days ever for a Netflix film!”

The movie, directed by Susanne Bier, follows a blindfolded family – a woman and two children – as they navigate a post-apocalyptic world where one’s sense of sight can actually get you killed by mysterious creatures.

The movie was so popular, it has not only inspired clever social media memes, but also the “Bird Box Challenge,” in which people attempt to complete everyday tasks while blindfolded.

Netflix, aware of the trending challenge, promptly issued a statement against it: “Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.”
