Las Cruces beats Gadsden in overtime to remain perfect

The Las Cruces boys basketball team is now 15-0 and 1-0 in District 3-5A play after surviving a tough road test at Gadsden Tuesday night in overtime.

The Bulldawgs managed to secure a 56-55 win over a Panthers team hungry to grab a win on its home floor.

The two teams, who entered with a combined record of 22-1, are both expected to compete for a state title this season, and they showed why on Tuesday.

Marcus Scott helped lead a Las Cruces rally in the second quarter that gave the ‘Dawgs a 20-13 lead.

But Gadsden never let the game get out of reach, eventually forcing overtime. They would hit a late three in OT to cut the game to one, but they were unable to pull the upset.

Though the Panthers have to be disappointed to fall a bit short in the end, they will get another shot at the Bulldawgs at Las Cruces High School on Feb. 1.

Las Cruces has another road game at Deming this Friday to look forward to while Gadsden will play at Carlsbad that same night.

The Bulldawgs might be 15-0 right now, but they still need to win 12 more games to match last year’s 27-0 start to the year. That Bulldawgs team ended up falling to Hobbs in the district tournament and then Atrisco Heritage in the state semifinals, finishing the year 29-2.
