High School Hoops: Parkland, Clint grab wins Friday night
Two of the most promising teams around town claimed victory Friday night on the hardwood.
The Parkland Matadors won a District 2-5A showdown at home against Eastwood by a final of 48-42 to improve their league record to 9-0.
The Troopers entered the game in second place in the district with just one loss, but they now find themselves two games back of the Matadors.
Donohvan Johnson set the tone early in the game for Parkland, connecting on three shots from downtown in the first quarter to give his team a 13-3 lead after just a few minutes of play.
Rudy Carbajal would rally the Troopers in the second quarter with some tough shots of his own and stellar passing, but the Matadors proved to be too much on their home floor, as they improved to 20-2 overall.
Meanwhile, in downtown El Paso, we had a battle of two different teams called the Lions. The Clint Lions made the trip to Lydia Patterson Institute to take on the LPI Lions.
Clint entered the game ranked 12th in the state coaches poll in Class 4A and showed why they are so highly-regarded by taking down an LPI team that entered the night with just three losses.
Clint improved to 17-7 overall thanks to the solid play of Jonathan Garcia, who helped guide his team to a 59-49 win on the road.
