Restaurants offer free food for federal employees during shutdown

At least two El Paso area restaurants are offering free food for federal employees not being paid during the partial government shutdown.

Poke3 is offering a free bowl of poke with one scoop of protein to all federal employees with their ID, Saturday and Sunday, and each following weekend until the shutdown is over.

Carnitas Queretaro is also offering a free meal, Saturday only, from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm to all federal employees who go to its east side restaurant near the Fountains at Farah Mall.That is being paid for by a local organization.

The shutdown will continue until funding is resolved by Congress and the president.

El Paso Electric has said it will work with affected employees to find individual solutions. Customers can contact EPE’s Customer Care at 915-543-5970 (Texas) or 575-526-5555 (New Mexico).

Texas Gas also offers payment options to all of its customers, you can call them at 800-700-2443 and is available from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm Mountain Time.

El Paso Water has said they will not be providing extra assistance for federal workers at this time.

GECU is offering different options for furloughed employees or workers without pay. The credit union can be contacted at (915) 778-9221 or customers can visit any branch for assistance.

ABC-7 has been told YMCA of El Paso is offering free memberships for up to 3 months. To apply for either assistance with current membership or getting a new membership, workers just have to bring a copy of their furlough letter to any location.
