Man shot and killed by EPPD officers was an Eastwood graduate, former high school wrestler

The man shot and killed by El Paso Police officers Monday morning was an Eastwood High School graduate.

ABC-7 has learned Louis Burrus graduated from Eastwood High School in 2012. Videos posted on YouTube by Burrus show he was also a member of the school’s wrestling team.

“He was the life of the team actually. We did really well and he was the district champion. He was one of our really good wrestlers,” said Adrian Rodriguez, Burrus’ wrestling coach at Eastwood High School, “Kids gravitated to him pretty well, so it was hard to take when I learned about what happened.”

The shooting happened just before 5:00 a.m. Monday on the 2900 block of Trawood Drive, near George Dieter Drive.

El Paso Police told ABC-7 officers were called to the complex to investigate multiple “shots fired” calls.

As the officers approached the complex, they spotted a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle in the shots fired calls and attempted to pull the vehicle over.

Police said the driver of the vehicle, later identified as Burrus, refused to stop and instead drove into the parking lot of the Wind Tree Apartments. As he entered the parking lot, Burrus crashed into a parked vehicle inside the complex, police said.

When officers approached Burrus, he allegedly tried running away before pulling out a weapon. Officials told ABC-7 that when officers realized the suspect was armed, they fired their weapons, striking the man.

Police said the officers rendered first aid and Burrus was later transported to a hospital for treatment. Police did not reveal how many times Burrus was shot by the officers.

Police officials said the Crimes Against Persons unit, Internal Affairs, Shooting Review Team and the Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting involving the officers.

The two police officers involved in the shooting were two and one year veterans of the department, police said.
