Study: Racial integration high in New Mexico, Texas
The Land of Enchantment is the land of inclusiveness, according to a new study of racial integration and racial progress.
New Mexico topped a list composed by personal-finance website WalletHub.
WalletHub’s 2019 report on states with the most racial progress focused on measuring gaps between blacks and whites in each of the 50 states and the nation’s capital to measure the efforts to harmonize racial groups. The study was released on Jan. 15, on the 90th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birth and days ahead of the national holiday honoring the civil rights icon.
WalletHub examined 22 indicators of equality and integration, from median annual income to standardized test scores to voter turnout.
Texas was ranked fifth on the list.
The least racial integration was measured in Washington, D.C. and in the Midwest.
New Mexico was found to have one of the lowest racial gaps in median annual income, unemployment rate and adults with a bachelor’s degree. New Mexico and Texas were found to have the lowest racial gaps in the poverty rate and adults with at least a high school diploma. The study showed that Texas had one of the lowest voter turnout gaps in the nation.
