New documentary focuses on local mothers giving birth
Birth is a life-changing event and every birth has a story. El Paso’s El Jardín Birth & Family Center is sharing those stories, as told by the mothers who lived them, in its new locally-produced documentary ” Birth In Pieces. ”
The nonprofit organization is part of the Paso del Norte Community Foundation’s Community of Philanthropy.
” Birth in Pieces ” focuses on women’s birth experiences in the current context of a high national and state maternal mortality rate. What’s wrong with birth in the U.S.? ” Birth in Pieces ” explores mothers’ individual birth stories within a larger framework of a fragmented maternal health care system that doesn’t always place value on a mother’s autonomy or well-being. In order to fix these systematic problems, El Jardín Birth and Family Resource Center started by listening to women. It is possible to have an empowering birth and healthy start to motherhood; all mothers and babies deserve that opportunity.
El Pasoans Lisbeth Berkely , Naomi Fertman and Nicole Cobb founded El Jardín Birth and Family Resource Center. The Paso del Norte Community Foundation works as El Jardín’s fiscal agent, managing and helping to grow El Jardín’s funds. The organization’s mission is ” to nurture a regional culture through education and advocacy that supports, cares for and empowers women during their critical transition of birth and parenthood. ” El Jardín offers support for new moms and families through programs such as their Breast Feeding Garden, peer support groups, music classes and guest speakers.
