Community Champions: NMSU women’s golf team ready for NCAA Regionals

The NMSU women’s golf team is once again the WAC champion, but their season is not over yet.

The Aggies learned Wednesday that they would be traveling to Cle Elum, Wash., outside of Seattle, to compete in the NCAA Regionals.

There are four regional tournaments that comprise the NCAA Championships, with each region hosting 18 teams.

That’s 72 total teams vying for a national title. Only 24 of them will advance to the next stage of the competition. The Aggies will need to be one of the six lowest-scoring teams at their regional site to advance to the final portion of the tournament, which begins May 17 at the University of Arkansas.

NMSU just won the WAC title in Washington, so they have plenty of confidence that they can play well no matter what conditions they face when regionals being on May 6.

“We’re going up near Seattle again. So, we just won the WAC up there. We know the conditions up there. It’s gonna be gloomy, probably rainy,” said NMSU golfer and WAC Player of the Year Dominique Galloway. “So, we’re excited to go up there.”

The Aggies gathered Wednesday as a team to watch the selection show. Although they’ve been to regionals five of the past six years, they were still in for a bit of a surprise once their destination was revealed.

“A little excitement there. But I think we were more surprised to see our name there in the first regional. We were kind of thinking we would go to Oklahoma, but we’re happy,” said head coach Danny Bowen.

Joining New Mexico State at the Cle Elum regional at Tumble Creek Club are the following teams: No. 1 USC, No. 8 Arkansas, No. 9 South Carolina, No. 16 Northwestern, No. 19 Washington, No. 23 Miami, Oregon, San Jose State, Oregon State, Old Dominion, Iowa State, San Diego State, UCF, Ohio State, Sacramento State, Boston Univ., and Southern Illinois.
