Former UTEP Miner Aaron Jones looks back at NFL Draft experience

Two years ago Aaron Jones was on pins and needles waiting to hear his name called in the 2017 NFL Draft.

The former UTEP Miner and Burges Mustang, was confident his name would be called at some point, but the entire process was still nerve-racking.

“It feels like it’s a lifetime when you’re waiting to hear your name called, so I’m definitely glad it’s over,” Jones said.

In 2017, Jones was selected by the Green Bay packers in the 5th round of the NFL Draft.

Jones was the 19th running back to be selected.

“It was a little frustrating seeing guys go before you who you felt that you were better than,” Jones said.

But Jones was patient throughout the process and since he was drafted, he’s been out to prove to the Packers that the organization made the right decision in selecting him.

In his two NFL seasons, Jones has rushed for 1,176 yards and has recorded 12 touchdowns.

“The work’s not done once you get drafted,” Jones said. “Then it’s about going and making a name for yourself and trying to get on the field and help your team win as many games as possible. And you just have to be ready to perform every day.”

Jones will enter his third season with the Packers with the goal of helping his team get to the playoffs.

Jones also says he’d like to make the Pro Bowl.

As he continues to progress in his NFL career, one thing that will remain consistent is Jones’ love for the Sun City.

“I knew I would eventually get to this stage,” Jones said. “I mean the city supports me so much, so I love it when I get in the end zone and I throw up the 915 and hear the feedback from everbody in the city. It makes me feel great and I know that they’re watching and I want them to know that I’m proud of where I’m from.”
