Teachers’ union questions credentials of EPISD trustee

The American Federation of Teachers in El Paso is questioning the credentials of Mickey Loweree, the El Paso Independent School District trustee for district seven.

“It’s a matter of integrity,” said Ross Moore, the union president. “You want people that can be trusted to manage your funds.”

Moore told ABC-7 there is no proof Loweree graduated from UTEP with a kinesiology degree, which she has claimed in the past. He also questioned her teaching credentials.

“This was an insult to educators,” Moore said. “This was an insult to all people who went to UTEP and earned their degrees. I’ve asked that Ms. Loweree withdraw from the race and resign from the board, effective immediately.”

Loweree did not return ABC-7’s calls for comment, but her spokesman did. Her campaign accuses Moore of playing politics.

“He’s had it out for her for a long time,” said Carlos Sierra, her campaign spokesman. “This dates back to before this campaign. He’s taking this to a whole other level.”

ABC-7 asked Sierra to directly provide the credentials.

“She does have all that stuff,” Sierra said. “Her degree, her credentials and the proof that she worked there. And, you know, she will provide that herself, personally, after the election.”

ABC-7 then asked the spokesman why the campaign will wait until after the election. “She’s not going to play into these games that the union does,” Sierra said. “Just because someone alleges something, doesn’t mean it’s true.”

ABC-7 did submit a public records request for Loweree’s credentials, which has not yet fulfilled. Our team will update you as soon as we learn new information.

Loweree is running against Daniel Call. Early voting begins Aprill 22nd. The school board election is May 4th.
