Marathon runner dressed as nurse denied Guinness record for not wearing skirt

A woman running in last week’s London Marathon would have beaten the record for running dressed as a nurse had she been wearing a skirt.

It was rejected by Guinness World Record because it did not meet its requirements of a nurse’s outfit.

The organization’s Senior Vice President, Samantha Fay, has since released a statement saying, “Guinness World Records takes the matters of equality and inclusiveness very seriously. I want to ensure all concerned that we have recognised the need for an immediate review of this attempt and the fastest marathon dressed as a nurse category and associated guidelines which we will begin as a priority. We are also committed to consistent reviews of all record categories to ensure they reflect the world we live in today.”

Jessica Anderson, a real nurse, ran the race in 3 hours, 8 minutes and 22 seconds, beating the old record by 32 seconds. But Anderson wore scrubs and pants, which didn’t fit in with Guinness’ requirements.

The controversy has since gone viral with nurses posting photos of themselves in scrubs denouncing the call.

Anderson also posted on Instagram a photo of herself telling Guinness, “this is what the fastest female marathon runner in a nurse’s uniform ACTUALLY looks like.”

This all happening during National Nurses Week in the U.S., which is recognized from May 6 through May 12.
