EPPD: Man charged with aggravated assault after shooting wife in the neck

El Paso Police charged the man accused of shooting his wife in the neck with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and family violence.

Sgt. Enrique Carrillo with El Paso Police confirmed the shooting happened just after 8 p.m. Wednesday on the 1400 block of St Johns, off Trowbridge Drive.

Police said 39-year-old Maria Pineda was shot in the neck during a domestic violence incident and sent to a nearby hospital. Police say she is listed in stable condition, but remains in the intensive care unit.

46-year-old Michael Iglesias, the victim’s husband, was booked into the El Paso County Jail on a $150,000 bond.

Sgt. Carrillo said Pineda called 911 herself after she was shot. When officers arrived, they found the woman on the floor next to a couch, holding her neck. The woman, a criminal complaint states, told the officers “help me. Help me. He (Iglesias) just shot me.”

A police officer at the scene allegedly overheard Iglesias saying “I just killed her.”

The officers found a Taurus Millenium .40 caliber handgun on the floor in the hallway.

Under interrogation, Iglesias told police he and his wife were experiencing marital problems and allegedly admitted to loading the handgun during the argument.

The criminal complaint states Iglesias told police that the during the argument “the weapon went off” striking the victim in the neck.
