Former UTEP guard Evan Gilyard commits to New Mexico State

Former UTEP guard Evan Gilyard announced on Twitter Thursday that he has committed to New Mexico State.

Gilyard left UTEP earlier this year after a disappointing 8-21 season.

The Aggies, on the other hand, made the NCAA Tournament after winning the WAC regular season and WAC Tournament titles. They finished with a 30-5 overall record after a devastating one-point loss to Auburn in the first round of the Big Dance.

Gilyard led UTEP in scoring last year at just under 14 points per game.

He also played well against NMSU, tallying 25 points in one of the two meetings against the Aggies. NMSU won both contests to continue its dominance over its rival from El Paso.

Gilyard and another former UTEP guard, Kobe Magee, both declared on March 12 that they planned to transfer from UTEP. They were the last two players remaining from the Tim Floyd era.

Gilyard will have to sit out the upcoming season for the Aggies but will still have two years of eligibility remaining after that.
