Local mom plans to celebrate Mother’s Day in the NICU after giving birth to twins

It’s exciting to celebrate Mother’s Day as a new mom, but it’s a bit different if your baby is still at the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit).

In this case, a local mother has newborn twin girls in the NICU as she celebrates her first Mother’s Day. But it doesn’t seem to bother her much.

“Knowing that they’re here with me is just beyond, you know I can explain, it’s just a happiness that I feel inside,” says Lysette Lerma.

And she’s even more excited to celebrate it with twins.

“I feel very blessed to have you know this opportunity to be a mother of twins you know. It’s my first time having babies so when they told me it’s two I was so excited,” says Lerma.

Las Palmas Medical Center is doing something extra special to make it an even better experience for moms in the NICU on Mother’s Day.

“The nurses create cards for the mothers, what it entails is they stamp the baby’s feet on a card or something, for memory for the mothers, and give them a rose, just to give something to celebrate Mother’s Day,” says Arleen Casarez, Director of the NICU at Las Palmas Medical Center.
