Ciudad Juarez Gets Liga MX Soccer Club
Get ready Borderland, top-flight Mexican league soccer is returning to the region.
In major news for the city of Juarez, Liga MX announced today that MountainStar Sports Group and several Mexican investors will bring the highest level of professional soccer play to the Mexican border city.
The Juarez organization announced today that they have acquired the rights to Puebla-based club Lobos de la Benemrita Universidad de Puebla or Lobos BUAP. Los Bravos will swap divisions with Lobos BUAP to become a full fledged member of Liga MX, and rebrand themselves as FC Juarez.
For the city of Juarez, the news of the club’s promotion has major implications. “The new team will bring excitement to futbol fans on both sides of the U.S.-Mexican border and we intend to compete strongly,” said FC Juarez Chairwoman Alejandra De la Vega Foster. “But having a club at this level here will also have an impact on economic development and tourism, as well as promoting the overall growth of our region.”
When the new club begins play as FC Juarez, it will mark the first time since 2012 Juarez has had a top-level soccer team, when the former Los Indios de Juarez were disaffiliated from Liga MX.
Liga MX comprises 19 clubs across Mexico, and FC Juarez will compete against every one each season. FC Juarez will share the field with storied franchises Chivas de Guadalajara, Club America, Cruz Azul, and more MX teams when the season starts this July.
“I have often said that sports transcend borders. It brings us together,” added Alejandra De la Vega Foster, who is also a co-owner of MountainStar Sports Group. “This team is for the Borderplex.”
