NAMI El Paso announces new location for 9th annual 5k NAMIWalks
The National Alliance of Mental Illness of El Paso kicked off its ninth annual mental health walk, NAMIWalks El Paso, early Friday morning with a breakfast for participants and sponsors taking part in this year’s walk.
In the past years the annual 5k walk has taken place at Memorial Park in central El Paso, but this years walk will take place at Ascarate Park in El Paso’s lower valley.
ABC-7’s Iris Lopez was a guest speaker at Friday mornings breakfast kickoff event. Iris will be one of three NAMIWalks chair members for this years walk. She spoke of her experiences with mental health and she also spoke about how important NAMI of El Paso is for those in our community.
NAMIWalks is a nationwide event with over 80 walks happening across the nation throughout the year. This year marks the ninth year of the walk here in El Paso.
NAMIWalks El Paso hopes to spread a message of hope for those who fear seeking help for mental health issues.
The walk is family friendly and registration is free for the event, but participants are encouraged to raise funds. All the funds raised from NAMIWalks El Paso stay in the El Paso community and help continue NAMI El Paso’s mission to provide advocacy, public awareness, support and education so that all individuals living with mental health conditions and their families can build better lives.
This year’s run will take place at Ascarate Park located at 6900 Delta Dr. on Saturday September 21st. Check-in will be at 8:30 a.m. The walk begins at 10:00 a.m.
