NMSU’s Nick Gonzales Thriving in Cape Cod Baseball League

It may be the offseason, but New Mexico State 2nd Baseman Nick Gonzales is seeing his stock skyrocket by the day. And he’s doing so over 2,000 miles from campus.

The rising junior was All-American last season, and this summer he’s been honing his skills in the prestigious Cape Cod league playing for the Cotuit Kettleers.

The Cape Cod League is the premier summer baseball league for college baseball’s best, and has seen alumni star in the Major Leagues such as Evan Longoria, Chris Sale, and Kris Bryant.

Gonzales has thrived this summer, leading all the league in on-base percentage (1.083), hits (41), and runs (31.) He was named a Cape Cod League All-Star starter at second base.

Gonzales is no stranger to being atop statistical categories, as he led the nation in hitting last season with .432 batting average and was a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award, the honor bestowed upon college baseball’s best player.

Gonzales has hit all summer with a wood bat, per Cape Cod League regulations, and he no doubt will see his stock as an MLB Draft Prospect rise as the season draws.

Gonzales will be a welcome addition back to Las Cruces for new Aggie baseball coach Mike Kirby as he settles in getting ready for next season.
