At least 5 arrested in El Paso-area immigration raids, BNHR says
The head of the Border Network for Human Rights said Wednesday that immigration raids in the El Paso are had resulted in at least 5 arrests over the past couple of weeks.
Fernando Garcia revealed word of the arrests at a press conference on Wednesday to decry new immigration and asylum policies being implemented by the Trump Administration.
Those arrests reportedly took place on El Paso’s east and northeast sides, as well as in Horizon City and Canutillo.
“The pattern has been the same in all cases. The agents come in unmarked cars, they wait for the individual — in these cases the male head of the household — to come out to go to work and then they detain them,” Garcia said. “As far as we know, none of these families targeted had a criminal record or anything beyond immigration-related (infractions), which are not criminal offenses.”
Garcia was joined at the news conference by delegates from the Seventh-Day Adventist Church and the Social Justice Fund to talk about recent developments affecting immigrant communities and asylum seekers across the U.S.
In addition to the ICE raids targeting immigrant communities, other topics of concern discussed included the situation of asylum seekers waiting in Ciudad Juarez under ‘metering’ and the Migrant Protection Protocol known as ‘Remain in Mexico’, as well as ongoing efforts to meet the basic humanitarian needs of people in shelters.
