American arrested at Juarez border crossing for trying to smuggle arsenal of weapons into Mexico

Mexican customs officers in Juarez arrested a U.S. citizen over the weekend for allegedly trying to smuggle an arsenal of weapons and ammunition into Mexico.

The man was identified by officials only as “Alonso M.,” and a mugshot photo released by Mexican authorities had his eyes blacked out. Mexico’s criminal justice system handles the public identification of suspects different from the U.S.

Mexican officials said the American crossed over into Juarez from the Santa Teresa port of entry on Sunday in a pickup truck with two other men, believed to be Mexican citizens, and the trio was arrested.

Authorities said a search of the truck by a police dog found the cache of weapons and ammunition; officers also seized $115,000 in U.S. currency.
