Only one deputy fired in weekend incident that left Chaparral man dead, officials say
DOÑA ANA COUNTY, New Mexico -- Doña Ana County Sheriff Kim Stewart confirmed the identity of a man who died in a weekend incident involving deputies.
Stewart identified the man as 63-year-old Brian Humble.
Stewart said a total of 6 units responded to the scene. The Doña Ana Sheriff's Office received help from Otero County, Anthony, and Las Cruces Police. Stewart said Doña Ana received help from other enforcement because Doña Ana units weren't able to communicate efficiently with dispatch. She credits Otero for helping with communication.
Stewart says of all units that responded only one Doña Ana deputy fired his weapon a total of nine times. She can not confirm if the gunshot wound that killed Humble was from the deputy or self-inflicted because it is still part of an ongoing investigation.
Officials say Humble was exchanging fire when a deputy lost sight of him. They say that is when the firing stopped. A Las Cruces police department drone was able to capture footage of Humble laying on the ground.
The shooting happened the morning of July 3.
