CBP officers discover over half a ton of meth hidden inside dump trailer at Santa Teresa Port of Entry

SANTA TERESA, New Mexico -- Customs and Border Protection officers intercepted and seized 1,037 pounds of methamphetamine in a dump trailer hauled by a truck at the Santa Teresa Port of Entry Thursday.

CBP officers selected the involved vehicle for a secondary inspection after the driver of the truck applied for entry into the U.S., in which officers conducted a non-intrusive inspection.

During the inspection, officers noticed anomalies in the dump trailer's appearance and found 208 bundles of what later tested positive for the properties of methamphetamine.

The driver involved was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations for prosecution, and CBP seized the narcotics and truck.

“Excellent job by our CBP officers in intercepting this enormous quantity of a very dangerous drug,” said acting Santa Teresa Port Director John Hawkins, “To put this into perspective during the last fiscal year CBP officers working in the El Paso Field Office area of operations seized 8,798 pounds of methamphetamine combined.”
