Organ Mountain highschool rallies together to support teammate in ICU
LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- The Field of Dreams was lit up Thursday night, but for more than a football game. It was more about a student athlete who could not attend.
It became a field of hope as the Organ Mountain Knights played the Mayfield Trojans without their teammate Abraham Romero.
Romero is in El Paso children's hospital in a medically induced coma after collapsing during last Friday's game. Today is the team's first game back without Romero.
The stadium was filled with students many wearing Abraham's jersey number. All routing on the knights for a win, as well as routing on Abraham through his recovery. The game began with a moment of silence.
"He's a good captain. He's an amazing person. This is his team and he wants them to push through." said Adriana Rodriguez at Organ Mountain.
Students rallied for a team win as they gathered to spread a message of healing.
"It's helping people kinda come to terms with their feelings about how everything happened and how everything is going. It's nice to see everyone, I guess, support him in a way," said Nicholas Randall, a student at Organ Mountain.
The knights worked to win Thursday night's game in his honor.
"He's very proud of his team and I know he wants them to win and I know they're not playing for the wins any more they're playing for Abraham because that's what he would've wanted," said Rodriguez.
The community showed its presence by fundraising to support Abraham and his family, as he remains hospitalized in El Paso.
"The community has really come together to support Abraham and it's a really cool thing to see actually," Caylee Neil.
"I'm sure all the boys are ready to show they're here for him you know what I mean it's really nice to see everyone like this," said Destiny Amezola student at Organ Mountain.
The students shared a message for Abraham.
"He has this and this isn't the battle he's gonna lose," said Rodriguez.
