Sentencing begins for El Paso man found guilty in the murder of state attorney
EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Sentencing is underway for the El Paso man who was found guilty in the murder of a state attorney in November 2020.
Joseph Alvarez was also found guilty of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against the victim's husband, Daniel Kauffman.
Alvarez shot and killed state attorney Georgette Kauffman in her garage and injured her husband during an attack on November 14, 2020.
During the trial, Alvarez spoke about his religious beliefs on abortions and what he believed were "satanic rituals," which led to his killing of Kauffman.
Defense attorneys argued Alvarez believed God had ordered him to kill Kaufmann, and that Alvarez believed he was doing the right thing.
Alvarez was quoted inside the courtroom saying on November 14, 2020, he "shot a witch."
