Man held without bond for deadly Sunland Park crash that killed El Paso mom, hurt 6 others

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- A west Texas man was ordered held without bond Wednesday on vehicular homicide and other charges stemming from the death of an El Paso woman in a Sunland Park crash earlier this month.

The four-vehicle late night crash on May 9 along McNutt Road (NM 273) at the Pete Domenici Highway (NM 136) also left a half-dozen other people hospitalized.

A judge found Eric Solis, 29, of Odessa, to be dangerous and ruled that he would remain in the Doña Ana County Detention Center awaiting trial.

"No release conditions will reasonably protect the safety of the community," concluded District Court Judge Conrad Perea.

Prosecutors contend Solis was speeding in his pickup truck, travelling at more than 95 miles an hour as he tried to flee police, when he ran a red light at the highway intersection and struck three other cars.

He also lacked a valid drivers license and insurance at the time of the deadly collision, New Mexico authorities said.

Killed in the crash was Danielle Perez, 32, of El Paso, and three of her children were among the six others sent to the hospital.

Perez's car was hit head-on by the pickup truck; her 16-year-old daughter Alizae was in the front passenger seat, while her 13-year-old daughter Giselle and 3-year-old son Kingston were in the backseat.

Perez's husband was driving another car nearby, with the couple's two other children inside it, and witnessed the crash that claimed his wife's life.

Why Solis was in the Borderland has not been indicated by officials.
