SWAT standoff in Las Cruces ends with arrest of suspected gunman

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- A SWAT standoff Monday night in central Las Cruces ended hours later with the arrest of a suspected armed robber, authorities said Tuesday.

Darrion Jackson, 20, of Las Cruces was being held Tuesday in the Dona Ana County jail without bond on a felony armed robbery charge.

Police said the hold-up occurred in the parking lot of Sprouts Farmers Market at 2340 E. Lohman Avenue, where Jackson allegedly stole a backpack at gunpoint.

According to police, Jackson fled to a home in the 1100 block of Colorado Avenue near Solano Drive where he was believed to have barricaded himself inside with a gun and possibly another person.

Callers to ABC-7 said that police could be heard over a loud speaker giving repeated instructions to Jackson to surrender.

After several hours of no response, police moved in.

"Early Tuesday morning, members of the SWAT team entered the home and located Jackson and another man hiding in a crawl space under the home," said police spokesman Dan Trujillo.

The other man, whom police did not identify, was detained but later released. Police said he was not charged in the incident.
