Police chase exceeding 100 mph leads to deadly shooting of man, crash along I-10 in west El Paso

EL PASO, Texas -- A police chase of an erratic motorist at speeds exceeding 100 miles an hour ended with a state trooper fatally shooting the driver and his car crashing along Interstate 10 in west El Paso, according to accounts from officials and witnesses.

Texas Rangers were investigating the deadly incident that culminated at I-10 east and Redd Road around 8 p.m. Friday.

El Paso police and the Texas Department of Public Safety said the situation began unfolding about an hour earlier when a man fled the scene of a family fight in a car that didn't belong to him.

The car was pursued for a time by El Paso police with a DPS helicopter and state troopers later picking up the chase, which authorities confirmed ended with a trooper shooting and killing the man.

Officials said the trooper who opened fire was not injured and no other people traveling the interstate were hurt.

Witnesses told ABC-7 they watched as troopers chased the vehicle as it weaved in and out traffic along the highway at excessive speeds well over 100 mph.

Scanner traffic indicated troopers didn't feel safe and tried to stop the vehicle by shooting to disable it. An eyewitness said the car spun out and crashed during the gunfire.

At a late night briefing, authorities said they couldn't immediately confirm the information from witnesses and scanner reports. They also didn't identify the deceased.

Dozens of law enforcement personnel from the two agencies responded to the crash scene and I-10 in both eastbound and westbound directions at Redd was expected to remain shut down well into the night.
