13-year-old in custody after ‘murder’ of stepdad, who was a Fort Bliss soldier

UPDATE #2, March 18: Officials at Fort Bliss confirmed Thursday that a man shot and killed, allegedly by his teenage stepson, was a senior non-commissioned officer assigned to the 1st Armored Division Headquarters.

Sgt. 1st Class Allan Edwards, 31, was a Tennessee native of Telford, who joined the U.S. Army in March 2008 and arrived at Fort Bliss in March 2014.

The Army said he had served in Afghanistan and was involved in NATO missions.

UPDATE #1, March 18: El Paso police said Thursday they took a 13-year-old boy accused of murdering his stepfather into custody and turned him over to juvenile authorities.

The boy allegedly shot 31–year old Allan Edwards multiple times earlier this week in the apartment where the family lived.

Detectives on Thursday also revealed a motive in the killing, writing in a report that the boy had witnessed his stepdad assault his mother earlier in the day while they were away from home.

"Once back at the residence the juvenile armed himself with a handgun belonging to Edwards. When the couple again began to argue the juvenile produced the handgun and shot Edwards," the report stated.

The boy's name has not been released because he is a minor and hasn't been charged in adult criminal court.

ORIGINAL REPORT, March 15: EL PASO, Texas — A man was shot and killed by his teenage stepson early Monday morning in a northeast El Paso apartment, in what police called a 'murder' even though they have not yet charged the boy.

Detectives were summoned about 12:30 a.m. to the 10550 block of McCombs Street, where La Miranda Apartments are located, to investigate the shooting.

The victim, identified by police as 31–year old Allan Edwards, was found dead in the apartment from multiple gunshot wounds.

Police said in a statement that they identified the shooter as the man's 13-year-old stepson, although "no charges have been filed at this time."

Authorities did not release the boy's name, but did refer to the shooting as a "murder" - suggesting that future charges could be filed in the case.

Investigators also did not provide any further details surrounding the shooting death.
