Police say northeast El Paso girl clings to life after being shot by man she was dating

UPDATE, April 12: A 16-year-old northeast El Paso girl remained hospitalized Tuesday with life-threatening injuries after being shot over the weekend by a 20-year-old man she was dating, police said.

Officers indicated the shooting was initially reported by the girl's mother as a suicide, but investigators discovered the man "was handling a handgun when the firearm discharged, striking the juvenile."

Police said Tuesday that their investigation into the shooting was ongoing; officials didn't indicate whether charges may be filed in the case.

According to a police incident report, the man and the girl had been dating; the relationship apparently had the mother's approval.

ORIGINAL REPORT, April 10: EL PASO, Texas -- A girl was shot and critically wounded Saturday morning in northeast El Paso, according to police.

The gunfire was reported about 7:50 a.m. in the 5200 block of Kodiak Avenue.

Police said the wounded girl was under the age of 18, but didn't provide her exact age.

She was taken to a local hospital with what authorities described as life-threatening injuries.

Police didn't indicate what led up to the shooting or whether anyone was in custody.
