Arrest made in murder of San Elizario man gunned down in front of his home
UPDATE, July 29: El Paso County Sheriff's deputies announced an arrest Thursday in the murder of a San Elizario man who was gunned down in front of his home earlier this month.
55-year-old Pedro Nunez was being held in the El Paso County Detention Facility under $1 million bond on the murder charge after being taken into custody earlier this week.
Detectives allege that he shot and killed 55-year-old Francisco Chavez in the 1200 block of Las Pampas Road in San Elizario on the afternoon of July 15.
Authorities have not revealed a motive in the killing.
UPDATE, July 16: El Paso County Sheriff's deputies on Friday identified a man gunned down in front of his home in San Elizario as 55-year-old Francisco Chavez.
Investigators said he was shot about noon on Thursday in the 1200 block of Las Pompas at Chicken Ranch Road, where deputies found him lying in the street after responding to a shots fired call. Chavez was rushed with critical wounds to Del Sol Medical Center, where he later died.
Authorities called his death a homicide and asked that anyone who may have information or witnessed the shooting to contact the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office at (915) 832-4407 or Det. James Nance at (915)838-5609.
No arrests had been made as of Friday afternoon.
ORIGINAL REPORT, July 15: SAN ELIZARIO, Texas -- A 56-year-old man was shot and critically wounded at a San Elizario intersection on Thursday afternoon.
The shooting victim was found about 12:10 p.m. at Las Pompas and Chicken Ranch Road by authorities responding to a report of shots fired.
Officials said the man was found lying in the street with a gunshot wound. The victim was rushed by ambulance to Del Sol Medical Center in critical condition.
The San Elizario City Marshal and El Paso County Sheriff's deputies were searching for the shooter; so far no arrests had been made.
A sheriff's commander said they were working on a suspect description based on witness interviews, but he didn't elaborate. Investigators were also still trying to determine what led up to the shooting.
