EL PASO, Texas -- Two people seen in the water along the Border Highway late Tuesday night managed to escape with their lives.

Fire department water rescue crews responded to the Border Highway at the Yarbrough Drive ramp just before 11 p.m., but said the pair managed to get out before crews had fully deployed.

A man reportedly fled the scene while a woman required medical treatment, according to dispatchers.

U.S. Border Patrol crews searched the area looking for the person who ran off.

Officials said the two were lucky the situation didn't end up being body recoveries.

So far in June, there have been at least four people who didn't fare as well.

On June 1, a man's body was pulled from a canal in south-central El Paso. Then on June 6, a body was found in a canal in the Rio Bosque wetlands area. Two more bodies were pulled from central El Paso canals on June 17.
