Sunland Park woman arrested for human smuggling in El Paso

Update (4:08 PM): Texas DPS officials tell ABC-7 that special agents arrested 21-year-old Sunland Park resident Gavriela Batres-Ramos and charged her with smuggling of persons and fleeing and evading in a motor vehicle.

Texas DPS says that Batres-Ramos was stopped on I-10 when her car hit two others. She jumped out and ran away before being caught. Officials found seven migrants in her car and turned them over to Border Patrol.

Batres-Ramos in now in the El Paso County Jail. No one was injured, officials say.


Update (9:43 AM): First responders tell ABC-7 that Texas DPS Troopers are on the scene. The incident started with a pursuit, first responders explain.


EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- All but one lane is currently blocked on I-10 East at Porfirio Diaz. Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) cameras show law enforcement units on the scene.

A TXDOT traffic alert says that the incident started at 9:31 AM and the clearing time is currently unknown.

ABC-7 is reaching out to law enforcement agencies in the area to learn what led up to the incident.
