Migrant accused of trying to bribe agent

SANTA TERESA, New Mexico (KVIA) -- Today, federal prosecutors announced charges for Samuel Mendoza-Torres, 29, who is accused of attempting to bribe a Border Patrol agent after he was picked up for alleged illegal re-entry into the U.S.
Court records claim that on February 8, 2025, agents took Mendoza-Torres and another person into custody near the Santa Teresa Border Patrol Station. Prosecutors say that while they were driving to the station, Mendoza-Torres asked an agent "Can we fix this?" and offered $400.
Later, prosecutors say Mendoza-Torres told agents he had escorted migrants into the U.S. illegally.
Officials say Mendoza-Torres is in custody, where he is expected to remain until trial. The trial date has not yet been set. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison.
