ANTHONY, New Mexico -- An Anthony man is facing an attempted murder charge after Doña Ana County sheriff's deputies say he attacked his wife - leaving her with severe injuries.

Heriberto Vasquez-Gutierrez was being held without bond in the county jail on Tuesday.

Authorities said he called 911 around 6:15 p.m. Monday to say his wife had fallen down the stairs at the couple’s home in the 3000 block of Opitz Road. However, deputies said her injuries were not consistent with a fall; she had head trauma and a cut to her throat.

His wife was flown to an El Paso hospital for treatment.
