Horses saved: El Paso rescue center provides care, education
EL PASO, Texas -- A local horse rescue and education center has been giving rescues a home since 2011.
Horses Unlimited takes in horse rescues from all over the country, some injured and even abused, and provides them with rehabilitation and other care.
"Right now we have 32 horses, so it's a lot on me to clean stalls daily and work out the horses," said Owner and Barn Manager Victoria Davis.
But the horses are not the only ones receiving care. Davis says the horses also give humans confidence and self-esteem while working with them.
"I think that's very therapeutic for people who have PTSD or anxiety, just to come out and brush them and be around them," said Davis.
And horses aren't the only animals at the center. There are also some goats and a pig named Kevin.
Volunteers come from across the Borderland to help with chores and ride the horses. No prior riding experience is necessary.
"We start with chores, doing the food and water for the horses, then we can work on exercising so anyone can work out or ride the horses they feel comfortable with," said Davis.
Next week, Horses Unlimited will be hosting a camp for children to learn about caring for, riding, and loving horses.
