El Paso Parks and Rec. looking for lifeguards for spring, summer seasons

EL PASO, Texas -- The El Paso Department of Parks and Recreation is looking for lifeguards pool managers, and more before the spring and summer swimming seasons.

The department is in need of lifeguards who can working during early morning hours when the pools open.

The city is getting ready to start hosing Lifeguard Certification courses in collaboration with the American Red Cross. Participants receive their lifeguard certification upon completion. However, if you receive your certification with the city, you must become a lifeguard with the City of El Paso. 

Classes are offered in-person or hybrid. Participants must be 15 years of age on or before the last scheduled session of the course. The course is now offered at a discounted rate of $67. All classes are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Instructor-Led Courses

  • Armijo Aquatics Center, 911 S. Ochoa St. March 4 to 7 or March 8 to 11
  • Westside Natatorium, 650 Wallenberg Dr. March 6 to 9 or March 13 to 16
  • Eastside Natatorium at the Beast Urban Park, 13501 Jason Crandall June 12-15

Hybrid Courses

  • Eastside Natatorium at the Beast Urban Park, 13501 Jason Crandall March 4 to 5, March 11 to 12, or March 18 to 19

Prerequisites before enrolling include:

  • Swim 300 yards, continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed.
  • Tread water for two minutes, using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds.

Benefits include a $1,000 sign-on bonus, tuition reimbursement for both part-time and full-time positions, and higher rates for shifts with heaving public use of pools.
