SISD parents concerned over possible increase in student to teacher ratio

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) — Parents of students within the Socorro Independent School district received an email on Thursday notifying them of a potential increase in the student-to-teacher ratio.

The Texas Education Agency established a 22:1 student-to-teacher ratio for grades Pre-Kinder-4th.

Amid continued growth in the area, a student could be asked to attend an alternate school due to a lack of space on their home campus.

The alternate option was to apply for a waiver to the 22:1 ratio rule. The Texas Education Agency approved the exception.

As a result, some classes may now fall under a new 23:1 student-to-teacher ratio.

Some parents are afraid this might prove costly to a child's education.

"I want their education to continue. Their education has been very, very good so far. So I'm hoping it doesn't impact them or that extra student ....then it'll be another student. They'll keep adding more and more and more," said Irene Carrejo, grandsons in SISD.

Carrejo is also a retired teacher and worries about how this might impact educators.

"As a grandparent and a retired teacher? It is alarming the amount of paperwork and the amount of responsibility. Every day it seems like teachers are adding more and more and more responsibilities and we love our job. I used to love my job, but sometimes it gets to be a bit much," said Carrejo.
