LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- Doña Ana County accounted for nearly a quarter of all new coronavirus cases reported Sunday by New Mexico state health officials.

Statewide there were 87 additional cases, with 21 of those occurring in Doña Ana County. Doña Ana was just two cases shy of matching the 23 new infections recorded in Bernalillo County - which is the Albuquerque metro area and led the state on Sunday.

The newly reported numbers brought the total caseload to 221 in Doña Ana County and 4,863 across New Mexico.

Doña Ana's death toll remained at just two, while statewide there were nine additional deaths Sunday. Those latest deaths, all occurring in McKinley and San Juan counties which have been at the epicenter of recent outbreaks and border Navajo Nation, brought the state's fatality toll to the 200 mark.

A governor-ordered lockdown designed to combat the surge in the McKinley County community of Gallup expired on Sunday afternoon, but the mayor told the Associated Press that the problem persists. McKinley County, which is just 3.5% of New Mexico’s population, has had nearly one-third of the state’s virus cases and one-fifth of known deaths.

Below you can see county-by-county data for virus cases and deaths across New Mexico. The data comes from Johns Hopkins University, so the numbers may vary from what's reported by the state health department.
