Another Otero County Prison inmate among 8 new virus deaths across New Mexico
CHAPARRAL, New Mexico -- An Otero County Prison inmate was among eight additional coronavirus deaths reported Friday in New Mexico.
The deceased state inmate, a man in his 60s who had been hospitalized, was the fourth inmate at the prison to die of the virus - which accounts for the majority of Otero County's now six fatalities from the pandemic. The state's official death count reached 464.
An inmate in his 30s on June 1 was the Otero prison's first death. That was followed by an inmate in his 60s who died on June 5, and another in his 50s whose death was noted on June 17.
There were no new virus cases to occur at the Otero County Prison, which to date has recorded 582 infections among inmates. The neighboring Otero County ICE Processing Center posted five new cases on Friday to bring its tally to 146.
Between the two adjacent detention centers, there have now been 728 cases. Meanwhile, there were just two new cases reported among Otero County residents for a total of 32 to date.
Elsewhere in southern New Mexico, there were 10 new cases occurring in Doña Ana County, which now stands at 692 infections and six prior deaths.
Across all of New Mexico on Friday, cases rose by 112 to reach a cumulative count of 10,260.
