New Mexico sees 225 new virus cases, with 36 in Doña Ana County amid holding pattern for reopening
SANTA FE, New Mexico -- New Mexico has more than 11,400 coronavirus cases with the confirmation Friday of 225 new infections and four deaths.
Friday's new deaths were all in McKinley County, in the northwest corner of the state. The death toll across New Mexico to date now stands at 489.
In southern New Mexico, there were 36 new cases reported in Doña Ana County to raise its total case count to 842. No new infections were reported at the Otero County Prison, which has seen about 80% of the inmate population there test positive for the virus.
Efforts to open more of New Mexico’s economy are on hold because of an uptick in cases in recent days.
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said there’s a false sense of security that has developed and that people are not being vigilant about staying home, wearing masks when they go out and keeping their distance from others.
She blamed lax social behaviors for the recent virus case increase in New Mexico and noted the risks presented by the exponential growth in infections in neighboring Texas and Arizona.
