Pet adoptions stall in Las Cruces during pandemic
LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- The number of adoptions this year in Las Cruces is about a third less than previous years, according to data from the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley.
"Animals are always coming in," said Clint Thacker, the executive director of ASCMV. "We’re seeing quite a bit of lower adoption rate."
The ASCMV took a number of precautions to mitigate the spread of Covid-19 this year, including canceling adoption events at the Farmers & Crafts Market of Las Cruces. That resumed about three weeks ago.
"It is a constant rotation at the ASCMV of animals coming in and leaving," Thacker said. "So we need you to come and adopt. We need people to come and foster and see the animals that we have.”
Data below is provided by the ASCMV:
2019 | 2020 | 2021 |
992 adoptions | 912 adoptions | 653 adoptions |
