Mother, daughter seek to raise money for displaced families from La Union flooding
EL PASO, Texas -- A mother and daughter team have raised thousands of dollars to help the clean-up efforts in La Union after homes were destoryed by torrential flooding.
Stacy Buddington and her 8-year-old daughter, Blake, saw the aftermath of the terrible flooding that displaced families in La Union and created a state of emergency. The images of people's homes destoryed and their lives reduced to rubble on the side of the road put Stacy and her daughter into action.
"I just knew I had to do something to help. So I organized this fundraiser," Stacy Buddington said.
Blake started handing out flyers at school and spread the word about her mission. They were raising money to buy shovels, cleaning supplies, and mosquito spray. The shovels to dig out cars that had been buried, and the spray to defend from the colonies of mosquitoes that had accumulated from the storm.
Since last week, Blake and her mom have been able to rasie $6,500.
"I've been blown away by the support. I don't think we've asked for one dime and we've raised thousands just from people wanting to give," Stacy said.
The duo are still looking for donations. If you would like to donate, you can do so by sending a check. The family asks that you make the check out to El Paso Community Foundation, memo Feed El Paso/La Union. You can mail it to P.O. Box 272, El Paso, TX, 79943.
