NMSU chosen to test Cisco new technology

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico (KVIA) -- New Mexico State University has been chosen by Cisco to test its new hologram technology. The hologram will allow online students to interact with the faculty and their classmates.

Andrew Sedillo, director of microcredentials instructional design, says they reached out to CISCO to express their interest in the immersive learning experience.

"They requested that we fly out to Norway to meet with their engineers to discuss the unit. From there, the partnership was established. Our role in this collaboration is to test the unit with students, faculty, and others to gather information regarding the user experience and report back to Cisco. Based on our feedback, the Cisco team makes updates, and we test again."

In November of 2023 Cisco sent New Mexico State University the rig. The rig is crucial to the function of the hologram. David Chavez, senior multimedia specialist says for the hologram to work both parties need to have the rig. Without the rig both parties can still see 3D objects as long as they are wearing special goggles.

Some of the classes that can benefit for this system are anatomy, geology and criminal justice. There is no set date for when this hologram system will be in classrooms, their goal now is providing feedback to Cisco to make sure the system is a success.
