Officials say despondent man shot at Doña Ana County Sheriff deputy before deputy returned fire

UPDATE 10:25 a.m. -- Doña Ana County Sheriff Kim Stewart says a man expressing suicidal comments lowered his shotgun toward a deputy and fired a round Saturday afternoon before the deputy fired back.

Stewart says it happened at the 4600 block of Rociante. Stewart says there were no collateral or sympathetic rounds fired by other officials.

Stewart said there were two deputies and a sergeant who responded to the call, and she stands by them.

The man has been identified as Carlos Gamboa, who was born around 1965. He was taken to the hospital after being shot, where he died.

Stewart says she would be giving out more information on the ongoing investigation than what normally might be given.

The initial call about a man making suicidal comments came in around 11 a.m. from a neighbor.

The shooting happened after 12:08 a.m. after deputies say they located the man. Stewart says they were in contact with the man's significant other, who told him he was armed and had other weapons in the home.

Stewart says after Gamboa was seen leaving a car and entering his home, he came out again with a shotgun, crossed a lot and advanced towards a deputy.

Stewart says Gamboa ignored repeated commands to drop his weapon.
