WATCH – Texas Senate Democratic Caucus ask Governor to call for special session to address school safety, mass shootings

AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas Senate Democratic Caucus is asking Governor Greg Abbott to call for a special legislative session to address school safety and mass shootings.

State Senator Cesar Blanco, who represents multiple west Texas counties including El Paso, was not present at the news briefing due to a Covid-19 diagnosis. Blanco said there's been extensive study on school safety and mass shootings.

"What we have learned, is that there is no cure all to prevent all of these mass shootings, but we should be doing everything we can to prevent the next one, not just some things. Keeping guns, especially assault rifles, out of the hands of dangerous people and criminals needs to be part of the broader solution," said Blanco.

The call for a special session comes after the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, that left 19 students and two teachers dead.
